John Carpenter’s The Thing was released in 1982 to a critical and public mauling, leading to it being a box office failure and, essentially, to the end of Carpenter’s career as a big studio director. The years since, however, have seen a revision of the film’s status and, nowadays, The Thing is regarded as a stone cold classic of both science fiction and horror, and acclaimed as among Carpenter’s greatest movies.
A key part of the movie’s excellence is the superb collaboration between Carpenter and his longtime Director of Photography, Dean Cundey. This video showcases their stunning work.
